Whether you’re into coffee or not, by now almost everyone in the United States of America has become a victim or is now a recovering addict from “Starbucks”- all thanks to their outrageous amount of stores everywhere and the sometimes blatant product placing in movies and TV shows. Even though there are other coffee joints like “The Coffee Bean” and other mom-and-pop shops, they eventually end up either relocating or closing down thanks to the competition. Nevertheless, there are other places that manage to get through thanks to their unique take on coffee; one of them is “Tierra Mia Coffee”.
Unexpected surprise
When it comes to paying attention on the road and on its surroundings, there’s no one worse than me. I’m rather new to the area, so it took me about three months to find a “Subway” and almost a year to discover a really good restaurant around the corner from where I live. I’m that distraído. So when someone told me there was a coffee house that specialized in Latino-inspired drinks nearby, I was immediately intrigued.
It was rather shocking when I found out that this place, “Tierra Mia Coffee” was located in South Gate, right by Firestone Blvd. and Atlantic Blvd. since I drive by those two streets quite often.
Never would I have thought there was such a place in an area like South Gate. Not that there’s anything wrong with South Gate, but amidst all the fast food joints, liquor stores, convenience stores and industrial complexes, the last thing I expected to find was a superb coffee house.
Perhaps “Tierra Mia Coffee” is the “Starbucks” antithesis… looks-wise and menu-wise. The place accents on simplicity and warmth, its cushioned seats and granite counter tops give it a cozy/ homely yet sophisticated feel to it. Now when it comes to the menu… well, that’s a whole different story.
Tantalizing menu
While “Tierra Mia Coffee” indeed serves coffee (duh!), lattes, cappuccinos, and frappuccinos, they’re nothing like the ones you’ll find at the other coffee shops.
For starters, you don’t have to worry about the confusing coffee lingo that usually comes with your coffee order. Here the drinks are either small, medium or large… none of that Grande/ Venti schtick.
Now, aside from the “classic” drinks you’ll find at every coffee joint, you’ll find several drinks que te van a dejar con el ojo cuadrado. No les hagas el feo and dare to try them, you won’t regret it.
One of those drinks is the “Horchata Latte”… yes, that’s right, “Horchata Latte” (they also have an “Horchata Frap” btw). Sounds interesting and like an unusual drink, however, after trying this unique latte I immediately found my new favorite drink. Horchata will definitely never be the same after trying a latte from “Tierra Mia”.
Another drink that alchies in particular will appreciate is the “Mojito Mint Tea Lemonade”. Extremely refreshing, probably the best take on a mojito, minus the alcohol.
And you wouldn’t want to leave “Tierra Mia” without trying one of their guayaba and cheese pastries, which you can chow down with a “Chocolate Mexicano”, a tasty combo and a great way to call it a night.
“Tierra Mia Coffee” unquestionably represents the coffee-loving Latinos and those who crave Latino-flavored and inspired drinks. Absolutely more coffee and more flavor for your taste buds and for your bucks.
