Argentinean Rock Legend Luis Alberto Spinetta Loses Battle with Pulmonary Cancer

Luis Alberto “El Flaco” Spinetta

62-year old icon of Latin Music, Luis Alberto Spinetta, died February 8, 2012 due to pulmonary cancer complications. The rock legend went public with the news of his condition on December 23 of last year, four months after being diagnosed with the disease.

Spinetta is considered one of the most influential rock musicians of South America. In his career, he formed part of important bands that inspired the Spanish rock movement in the early ’70s such as Alemendra, Pescado Rabioso, Invisible, and Spinetta Jade. He was also co-founder of the popular rock-funk band Illya Kuryaki and the Valderramas.

As a solo artist he released more than 20 albums, the latest one, Spinetta y las Bandas Eternas (2010), was recorded live during a concert he held at the Velez Sarfield stadium in Argentina where musical greats such as Charly García, Gustavo Cerati, Fito Páez, and others joined him on stage.
