Stories & Songs

Hidalgo and Pérez from Los Lobos’ fame, have been playing various markets with their Stories & Songs show around the country, but this will be the first time they bring the performance home to Los Angeles. The event is  a benefit concert for the upcoming theaterwork Evangeline, The Queen of Make-Believe, and its related educational programs for at-greatest-risk youth. The event is one night only on June 4th, 2011 at Los Angeles Theatre Center

The show looks back at Hidalgo and Pérez’s 40 years of music making.  The two started writing songs together when they were in high school, even before they formed Los Lobos. As the main songwriters in one of the world’s most enduring and diverse musical groups, they’ve accumulated an outstanding collection of tunes. Their songs have been covered by various recording artists including Waylon Jennings, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, and Robert Plant.

This fundraising event will also give the audience a chance to preview Pérez’s collaboration with About…Productions on the original theaterwork “Evangeline, The Queen of Make-Believe”.  The theater work will be developed and written by Pérez, About…Productions’ Artistic Director Theresa Chavez and Associate Director Rose Portillo. The production will incorporate the songs of Hidalgo and Pérez, whose early hit “Evangeline” gives the piece its title.

This benefit concert is part of a series of events leading up to Evangeline’s 2012 debut.  In June About…Productions will host a free Concert Reading of “Evangeline, The Queen of Make-Believe” at Plaza de la Raza.

For the past 22 years, About…Productions has been creating original and critically acclaimed theaterworks both locally and nationally. About… Productions innovative Young Theaterworks literacy program serves at-greatest-risk youth, and celebrates the lives of seniors.
