La Santa Cecilia Takes Latin Soul to UCLA’s Fowler Museum

Last summer I was having lunch at a chain burger restaurant in Pasadena when I found a flyer about the Make Music Pasadena Festival taking place a few days after. One of the bands performing was a band I never heard of but the description of them made me very curious. They were described as a hybrid of musical fusion from jazz, ranchera, cumbia, vallenato, boleros, and Afro Cuban rhythms coupled with one of best voices to come out of Los Angeles in a long time. The band was La Santa Cecilia.
Soon after their Make Music Pasadena Festival gig, I kept seeing their name pop up in various print, television and online media. And not long after that, I come to find out they received a Grammy nomination in the Best Tropical Song Category for “La Negra” from their EP “Noche y Citas”. Now, La Santa Cecilia will perform at the UCLA’s Fowler Museum on Saturday, February 4, 2012, as part of the PST/Grammy Museum Exhibition: Trouble in Paradise: Music and Los Angeles 1945-75.
The event will consist of an interview of the band by Josh Kun, curator of the exhibit, followed by an open forum between the audience and La Santa Cecilia. A workshop with Patssi Valdez, founder of Chicano art group ASCO, and a live performance by the band are also on the schedule.
I’m not surprised to see that this band has accomplished so much in the past few months. And you wouldn’t be either if you were to witness the energy they create on stage. I’m looking forward to seeing what they have in store for 2012 because if the past few months have proved anything, it’s that La Santa Cecilia shows no signs of stopping.
So I hope you grab your tickets, which are $10 for Fowler/GRAMMY Museum Members and students, and $15 for the general public at the door or via The GRAMMY Museum box office. Box office hours are Monday through Friday from 11:30 am through 7:30 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am through 7:30 pm. I hope to see you there.
