Even though back in elementary and high school many of us dreaded reading as much as a visit to the dentist, some of us eventually found out that reading for the mere pleasure of reading is not impossible and it’s not something exclusively for nerds and book worms.  However, to find a book to spark enough interest to read from beginning til end just because can be a difficult task… after all, with our busy schedules most of us would rather take a nap or catch the latest “Heroes” episode, but alas, we must not entirely kill our brain cells, so reading a book every once in a while nos sirve para despertar a las pocas neuronas que nos quedan, to spark our imagination and build or vocabulary.  After re-reading three times all the novels by one of my fave authors, Augusten Burroughs I was about to begin my re-reading session for the fourth time, when I came across “Look Me in the Eye, My Life with Asperger’s”.

Reading the prologue was enough to get me intrigued, even more so after finding out that the author (John Elder Robison) is none other than Augusten Burroughs’ older insufferable bro. I was expecting similar over-the-top anecdotes and many WTF?!/ oh-no-he-didn’t crazy chapter… however, I came across something almost entirely different, yet reminiscent of Burroughs’ style.

While Augusten Burroughs’s memoirs revolve around his dysfunctional family, his drunken antics, and his overall wackiness, John Elder Robison takes a different approach, leaving his family drama on the back seat and focus on his Asperger’s disease in a touching yet compelling manner.

John Elder Robison talks about growing up with this almost unknown disorder and gives us a different family perspective from what Augusten Burroughs describes in his memoirs. There’s no sugarcoating and definitely no b.s., he tells it as it is: raw and poignant.

“Look Me In The Eye” will introduce readers to this rare disorders and it will also help the readers understand people suffering from Asperger’s.  John Elder Robison manages to write an entertaining yet informative and touching debut novel que te dejará con ganas de más.  Undoubtedly, the storytelling gift runs in the family.
