"Fashion Against AIDS": Shopping for a Greater Good

This summer, your wardrobe can say more about you than which fashion trends you currently follow. Your sun-grabbing atuendos can let people know that you’ve got social issues on your mind as well. As part of the Designers Against AIDS and H&M collaboration, “Fashion Against AIDS” campaigns, a complete H&M collection will arrive at H&M stores across 32 countries with a marketing plan that puts a whole new spin on shopping with benefits.

According to H&M’s viral portal, 25% of the sales price of all “Fashion Against AIDS” garments sold in the projects first year run went to HIV/AIDS awareness projects. Celebrities such as Rihanna, My Chemical Romance and Ziggy Marley were amongst the crowd that supported the initiative. As part of their collaborative, these artists designed a limited edition Tee that was sold at selected locations. The celeb-designed tee idea was also implemented during the projects’ sophomore run where artists such as Dita Von Teese, Tokio Hotel and Yoko Ono joined in as guest designers.

This third year around, H&M masterminds have taken the tee initiative tenfold by creating an entire “Fashion Against AIDS” collection. And realizing that summer calls for music festivals and that young men and women flop to these events by the hundreds, and usually in a trendy fashion, H&M’s 2010 FAA campaign includes summer festival must-haves like mini dresses, shorts, light denim, scarves, gladiator sandals, hats and also sleeping bags, fold out chairs and wash bags.  

Keeping to the projects’ mission statement, a portion of all FAA collection sales will go to HIV/AIDS awareness projects this year as well. The entire collection is made available May 20th, 2010.
